The commissioning of an advanced surface movement guidance and control system at Perth Airport is complete, according to Australian air navigation service provider Airservices. The new radar, also in use at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne airports, allows controllers to see, identify and predict conflicts between aircraft and equipped vehicles on runways and taxiways.
“This offers controllers better detection of potential conflicts and further lowers risk of surface collisions. It also improves the reliability and efficiency of airport operations during bad weather and at night, when distances from our control tower can make visual monitoring more challenging," said Airservices executive general manager for air traffic control Greg Hood.
