Airservices Australia, the air navigation service provider (ANSP) responsible for Tasmanian airspace, on Saturday refuted reports from a local newspaper that a number of aviation incidents represented unsafe conditions in local airspace. Of the incidents reported in the Weekend Tasmanian, none were assessed as requiring further investigation or follow up by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), according to Airservices.
Although the ANSP did not offer details of the incidents, it did state in a news release, “Tasmanian airspace is safe…The vast majority of incidents were not attributable to air traffic control and did not relate to the use of the Tasmanian Wide Area Multilateration (TASWAM) surveillance technology.” Airservices added that air traffic control surveillance in Tasmania is provided by 14 ADS-B ground stations located across the state that offer redundancy in the event of equipment failure and still maintain reliable ATC services.
