Content Body

The ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) is seeking to finalize recommendations for new aircraft emissions standards while it convenes at ICAO’s headquarters in Montreal over the next 10 days. In particular, it is trying to find consensus on aircraft carbon dioxide (CO2) and non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM) standards, as well as the technical work required in support of an international aviation global market-based measure (GMBM) scheme.

The aircraft CO2 and nvPM standards will then be subject to final review and adoption under the 36 State ICAO Council during one of its sessions this year. Then the full aviation GMBM proposal will be considered by all 191 ICAO member states at the UN aviation agency’s 39th Assembly in late September.

Additional developments under review at this month’s CAEP meeting will include a life cycle assessment methodology proposal for sustainable alternative fuels; noise issues pertaining to helicopters, unmanned aircraft and future supersonic aircraft; and ICAO-agreed trends on aircraft noise, nitrous oxide (NOX) and CO2 emissions.
