For the first time, specific batches of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) have received certification for their environmental benefits under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (Corsia).

The fuels produced by Ecochem in China, Neste in the Netherlands, and World Energy in the U.S., were certified by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB )—two ICAO-approved programs.

Responsible for 1,542 tonnes of CO2 emissions reductions, the nine milestone batches of unblended SAF were derived from waste materials and represent lifecycle emissions savings between 75 and 84 percent over conventional jet fuel.

“The successful certification of these sustainable aviation fuels ensures that they present real environmental benefits on a life cycle basis, and it also confirms the performance of the certification process itself,” said ICAO council president Salvatore Sciacchitano. “This milestone shows that Corsia global framework for sustainability assessment is robust and ready to support the achievement of ICAO’s goals on climate change.”
