Content Body

Pratt & Whitney has announced upgrades to both its venerable JT8D engine and the PW4000 high bypass ratio turbofan. Improvements to the JT8D are aimed at enabling the engine to meet the latest ICAO Chapter 4 noise rules, which took effect in January. A noise-reducing kit will, says the company, provide a solution to operators of MD-80s wishing to avoid landing charges levied because of excessive noise.

The kit has been developed with Renton, Washington-based Aviation Fleet Solutions and includes a fan inlet liner, 16-lobe mixer, muffler and tabbed engine nozzle which will, says P&W, bring noise levels down by 5 decibels.

Meanwhile, P&W is offering upgrades to its PW4168 engine powering Airbus A330s, which will reduce fuel burn and maintenance costs. An improved full-authority digital engine control system will also improve operability. Other benefits will derive from a new high-pressure (HP) compressor ring case, new HP turbine technologies and an improved Talon II combustor. The package will be available following certification in 200
