Content Body

Boeing has delivered its first 737-800 equipped with a new type of GPS-based landing system developed by Rockwell Collins. The Federal Aviation Administration certified the GLS after a three-year test program during which Boeing proved the system could be used for low-visibility automatic landings. According to Boeing, the system integrates GPS position information with a multimode receiver in the airplane to provide improved position accuracy. The FAA has certified the GLS system on the 737 to support Category I operations, which allow takeoff and landing in low-visibility conditions. In the future, as GLS ground stations become available worldwide, the system will support Category III operations, allowing airplanes to operate in very low or near zero visibility conditions. Europe’s Joint Aviation Authorities is expected to certify GLS in the 737 soon, according to Boeing.
