UK leisure airline and Boeing 737-800NG operator Jet2 has placed an initial order for 36 A321neos as the Leeds-based carrier moves ahead with its aggressive fleet expansion and renewal plans, Airbus said Tuesday. The order makes Jet2 a new Airbus customer and a new A320neo operator. Jet2 plans to decide on an engine type—either CFM Leaps or Pratt & Whitney PW1100Gs—at a later date, added Airbus.

“This aircraft is, in our opinion, the most efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft in its class today,” said Jet2 executive chairman Philip Meeson. Scheduled to start in 2023, the A321neo deliveries will stretch over five years until 2028. The aircraft will come equipped with 232 passenger seats.

“We very much welcome Jet2’s decision,” added Airbus chief commercial officer Christian Scherer. “Traditionally having been operating non-fly-by-wire aircraft, we note with great satisfaction that after having tested a couple of leased A321s and run a comprehensive evaluation, Jet2 is forward-looking and investing in modern and future proof Airbus fly-by-wire technology.”

Since its predecessor, Channel Express, rebranded as Jet2 in 2002, the airline has taken delivery of 34 new Boeing 737-800NGs. Ranked as the UK’s third-largest airline, Jet2 now operates from 10 UK airports to more than 60 destinations with its nearly 90 Boeing 737s.
