The Air BP-Jio Indian joint venture has completed 575 fuelings since launching in September, and the India operations now include a total of 31 airports.
Rajkot International Airport, based in the state of Gujarat, promotes itself as an international hub and greenfield airport serving the Saurashtra region. Owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airport offers a peak-hour handling capacity of 2,800 passengers and is Air BP-Jio’s 31st airport location in India.
Air BP said the Indian government had decided to develop the facility into a large international airport to keep pace with growing demand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new airport on July 27 and it officially began flight operations on September 10.
“Air BP-Jio excelled in making the fuel station ready in a short space of time with all regulatory compliances and approvals,” said Diganta Borah, Rajkot International Airport’s director. “The successful commencement of flight operations was very much dependent on air BP-Jio’s service. The team worked hard and met the target, as promised.”
The third-largest domestic aviation market in the world, after the U.S. and China, India is poised to become one of the fastest-growing markets for passenger and cargo transport, Air BP said. The company serves 140 airports, a figure expected to grow to 220 in the near term, and a rapid expansion from the 74 India had as late as 2014.
Air BP, the aviation division of BP, is a major supplier of aviation fuel products and services and has invested in the aviation industry for more than 90 years. In 2019, it supplied more than 6.7 billion gallons of aviation fuel and it also supports expanding the use of sustainable aviation fuel as demand for low-emissions fuel grows.
