Lufthansa Technik can now approve major changes to aircraft, engines, and components under a “certain STC (supplemental type certificate) privilege” granted by EASA. The privilege acknowledges engineering work that Lufthansa Technik’s Design Organisation has done previously and applies to Airbus A320ceo cabin conversions.
Lufthansa Technik’s Design Organisation employs nearly 700 design, compliance certification, and certification engineers across 12 company locations.
“The privilege applies to recurring engineering solutions for which the Design Organisation has already frequently obtained STCs and demonstrated to manage similarity of design and repetitiveness of certification within an agreed and continuously monitored framework,” according to the company.
The A320ceo scope includes the ability for Lufthansa Technik to approve seat reconfigurations, relocation of galleys and lavatories, and repositioning of class dividers without having to obtain EASA approval each time. The privilege speeds up work by shortening approval timelines, reducing the number of people involved, minimizing idle time, and lowering product risk.
“The privilege allows us to clearly differentiate between routine projects we can handle independently and those requiring close EASA involvement,” said Uwe Schueler, v-p Design Organisation at Lufthansa Technik. “We expect certification cost savings of up to 20%.”
