TEB Getting System To Stop Aircraft

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey authorized the installation of an engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) at the departure end of Runway 6 at Teterboro (N.J.) Airport (TEB) by the end of next year. The project was originally scheduled for completion in mid-2007. Port Authority executive director Kenneth Ringler said, “The EMAS, made of collapsible aerated cement blocks, rises from zero to 30 inches and can safely stop an aircraft traveling at up to 80 mph.” Last February 2, a Challenger overran Runway 6 at TEB after an aborted takeoff, traversing a busy road and crashing into a warehouse.
