Oxford Selectman Opposes Approach Lights

August Palmer, a selectman in Oxford, Conn., opposes adding approach lights to the master plan at the town’s Waterbury-Oxford Airport. He maintains the landing aids would add noise and light pollution to the area. Airport officials and local pilots disagree, saying the lights would add safety. David Head, supervising planner for the DOT, said, “It enhances pilot reference during low visibility. They’ll have a lighting system to track and follow into the airport. It will reduce the approach visibility minimum from one mile to half a mile.” Palmer countered, “This is not in the best interest of the town of Oxford.”
