Further icing accidents and incidents involving the Cessna Caravan, flight manual revisions that contain erroneous data and recent flight tests prompted the FAA last week to issue AD 2006-06-06. The new directive supercedes AD 2005-07-01 issued last March. The earlier directive, requiring tactile and visual checks of all upper surfaces, followed a study of several icing-related accidents involving the Caravan in the 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 icing seasons. The new AD, which sets limits on autopilot use among other requirements, results from two fatal accidents and one loss-of-control incident in the 2005/2006 icing season. The FAA said flight manual revisions dated December 5 contain incorrect maximum weight limits for 600-shp Caravans. Flight tests show that Caravan climb performance in clear ice is lower than the data published in the revisions, “and that the aural stall warning system will not activate before a stall in some icing conditions.” Meanwhile, the FAA issued a correction to AD 2006-01-11, another icing-related directive for Caravans issued January 12.
