The Citation 560 (N86CE) crash in Carlsbad, Calif., on January 24 apparently followed an “attempted aborted landing” on Runway 24 at McClellan-Palomar Airport, according to the NTSB’s preliminary report. The two pilots and two passengers were killed. Approaching at a much higher than normal speed, the Citation touched down more than 1,500 feet down the 4,900-foot-long runway. The thrust reversers were deployed, then stowed. After the twinjet lifted off near the departure end of the runway, the Safety Board said the landing gear hit the localizer antenna platform and the left wing caught the platform access ladder. The aircraft then traveled approximately 400 feet, settled to the terrain, crashed into a self-storage building and caught fire. VMC prevailed and the crew of the Part 91 flight had just canceled its IFR flight plan from Hailey, Idaho.
