Two killed in King Air crash in Florida

The pilot and his teenage son were killed January 31 when their King Air C90, N75GC, crashed into Everglades National Park about 10 minutes after departing from Marathon, Fla., on an IFR flight plan to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. About three minutes before the accident, the pilot radioed ATC that he was 32 miles southwest of Tamiami. In the last radio communication, ATC cleared the turboprop twin to a heading of 030 degrees and a descent to 2,000 feet. At the time of the accident, the weather at Homestead, Fla., about 60 miles north-northeast of Marathon, was reported as two miles visibility in rain showers, overcast at 1,200 feet and wind 070 degrees at 10 knots.
