SIC Type Rating Compliance Extended

The FAA is scheduled tomorrow to officially release a notice that extends to June 6 next year the compliance deadline for the new second-in-command type rating requirements. The rule, published August 4, had an original deadline of September 6. The FAA said the compliance period is being extended to allow time for “pilots who need the SIC type rating to prepare and submit the necessary paperwork, and the FAA and its designees need time to process the forms and issue the ratings.” The purpose of the rules is to make it relatively simple for FAA type-rating requirements to conform with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements, allowing U.S. flight crews to fly to international destinations without the threat of being grounded for not holding the appropriate type rating. The FAA said it has been “put on notice by several foreign civil aviation authorities that they intend to begin enforcing the type-rating requirement.”
