L-3 Avionics Systems has received STC approval and parts manufacturer approval aboard the King Air C90 for the Iris infrared imaging system. The C90 is the first application for Iris, which a spokeswoman said is generating “tremendous interest. We have installation and certification programs under way for many different platforms.”
The Iris enhanced-vision system displays a real-time gray-scale image of the runway environment day or night, including other aircraft, people and obstacles. The barium strontium titanate detector provides 320- by 240-pixel clarity. L-3 claims it is immune
to solar radiation and displays an uninterrupted, continuously calibrated image even during turns and maneuvers. List price for the system is $15,000.
