Ron Joyce, cofounder of coffee chain Tim Hortons, was one of eight passengers on board a three-and-a-half-week-old Bombardier Global 5000 (registration C-GXPR) that crashed while landing Sunday afternoon on the private airstrip of a resort community on the Northumberland Strait in Nova Scotia, Canada. Neither the passengers nor the two crewmembers were injured when Joyce’s large-cabin jet landed short in a patch of gravel. According to Canada’s Transportation Safety Board, the Global 5000’s gear dug into the gravel and snapped off when it hit the lip of the paved surface. The airplane subsequently was sent spinning down the runway on its belly, causing considerable damage. Lead investigator Yves Jolicoeur told the Toronto Globe and Mail that the Board would be looking to see if weather or pilot training and experience were a factor. The airplane’s flight data recorder has been recovered and will be studied for clues.
