All three people aboard a Citation Eagle II were killed when the twinjet crashed while on approach in rain and mist to Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey, Idaho, on the afternoon of March 15. The Eagle II is a Citation 501 with Williams FJ44 engines in place of the original P&WC JT15Ds. The accident aircraft, a 1978 Citation 501SP registered as N70FJ, was recently modified by Sierra Industries, the former holder of the Eagle II STC. (It’s now owned by Garrett Aviation.) According to news accounts, the three people aboard were identified as pilot Osborne Call, 62, founder of the Flying J chain of truck stops and restaurants; Richard Germer, 56; and his wife, Ilene, 56. The jet had taken off from Salt Lake City on an IFR flight plan. A special weather observation reported the visibility as seven miles in rain and mist, scattered clouds at 1,000 feet and overcast at 2,800 feet.
