Banyan Air Service recently completed its first major avionics modification on
an executive Boeing 747SP. The eight-week project was done during a major inspection performed in Europe. Banyan subsequently sent a team to check, calibrate and do final tests on the system, which included the Rockwell Collins Tailwind 550 satellite-direct television entertainment system and Airshow 4000 moving map. Six television decoders consisting of dual receivers allow satellite-direct reception in Europe, the Middle East and North America, with viewing on bulkhead-mounted, 32-inch LCD monitors. The existing satcom system was modified to work with the new Rockwell Collins HST 2120 transceiver, allowing high-speed Internet access via a new EMS CNX 200 cabin router. The router was augmented with a VT Miltope multifunction access point to provide Wi-Fi access throughout the aircraft. With Rockwell Collins approval, Banyan provided engineering and engineering orders, pre-fab harnesses and all racks and instructions.
