Final Report: Learjet crashed in water

Bombardier Learjet 35A, Groton, Conn., June 2, 2006–The NTSB determined the probable cause of the International Jet Charter Learjet’s crash into approach light stanchions in the water to be the crew’s failure to properly monitor the airplane’s altitude, resulting in the inadvertent descent into water. Contributing to the accident were the foggy weather and the captain’s decision to descend below the decision height without sufficient visual cues. There was a 100-foot broken cloud layer and two miles visibility. The ATP-rated pilot and ATP-rated copilot were killed and the three passengers injured.
