Avanti earns RVSM in Canada, FAA to follow

Transport Canada has approved the Piaggio Avanti to operate in reduced vertical separation minimum (RVSM) airspace in Canada. FAA approval for operating in U.S. domestic RVSM airspace is expected shortly, according to Piaggio America of Greenville, S.C. The airplane previously won JAA RVSM approval. To obtain RVSM approval, the twin turboprop must be equipped with an upgraded air-data computer and an IS&S altimeter, a $60,000 option on new aircraft and an $80,000 package when retrofitted. Crews must still document appropriate training before they can apply for a letter of authorization to operate in RVSM airspace.
