El Toro civil airport plan approved by local board

The Orange County, Calif. board of supervisors has certified an environmental impact study and master plan for reuse of the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station following receipt of an FAA report stating that a commercial airport on the site can be operated safely. The U.S. Navy, current owner of the property, and the FAA have up to six months from October 26 to issue a decision finalizing the process. However, the projected El Toro International Airport faces a potential legal challenge from an anti-airport group that wants the property used for recreational purposes.
