Avionics Update: Avidyne introduces weather for FlightMax

Avidyne’s FlightMax multifunction displays will soon be able to receive text and graphic weather information, transmitted to the airplane through the Orbcomm low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. Using the Flightmax DX50 datalink receiver, the service will deliver weather information to the cockpit using a bidirectional request/reply system that interfaces with any FlightMax display. In addition to Nexrad radar images, pilots can request Metars and TAFs. The service is scheduled to go on the air next summer. The DX50 receiver and antenna sell for $2,950, but Avidyne has announced a $2,450 introductory price for current FlightMax customers and those who purchase equipment by March next year. FlightMax data services will start at $29 per month.
