The DOT’s office of inspector general on June 16 opened a review of the FAA’s oversight of the growing use of regional jets and the resulting effects on operations and competition. In a letter to the FAA’s assistant secretary for aviation and international affairs, the IG said, “We will identify how regional jets are being used by airlines to replace and supplement mainline service, and replace service with turboprop equipment.” The IG will also look at the effect regional jets have on air fares and service levels. In addition to interviewing FAA officials, the IG intends to talk to regional airlines and pilot unions. The review is expected to take “several months,” according to an IG official.
