New standards adopted for insulation flammability

The FAA last month approved upgraded flammability standards for thermal and acoustic insulation materials used in Part 25 (transport category) aircraft. Revised standards include new tests and criteria that address flame propagation and entry into the cabin of an external fire. The FAA said the new rules, which apply to both private and commercial operations, are intended to “enhance safety by reducing the incidence and severity of cabin fires and providing additional time for evacuation by delaying the entry
of post-crash fires into the cabin.” While the final rule is effective on September 2, manufacturers and outfitters will have until Sept. 2, 2007, to comply.
