Content Body

The crash of a Beechcraft King Air 350 on approach to a private airfield near the beach resort of Trancoso in northeast Brazil on Friday killed the airplane’s owner, banker Roger Wright, and 10 members of his family, as well as both pilots and a nanny. The airplane went down in dense jungle about 500 feet to one side of the runway around 9 p.m. local time in heavy rain, just after the pilot radioed that he had the runway in sight and lowered the landing gear. Some witnesses claimed the twin turboprop was traveling unusually slowly, while others said one wing struck a hillside before the crash. The airplane’s cockpit voice recorder has been recovered, and one engine and a propeller have been sent for analysis, as engine failure is considered a possible cause. The pilot was experienced and the airplane, registered as PR-MOZ, had undergone its annual inspection a week before the accident. While 14 were aboard the 10-passenger airplane, four were children, and half of the fuel would have been consumed in the three-hour flight from São Paulo, but overloading has not been eliminated as a factor.
