TrueNorth Avionics has gained the initial supplemental type certificate (STC) for its Simphone Global Broadband System, billed as a compact and low-cost high-speed-data satcom system for business jets. Developed in collaboration with Cobham, the satcom system links through Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband satellite data service and features the first use of Cobham’s recently introduced IGA 5001 intermediate-gain satcom antenna. Mid-Canada Mod Center in Mississauga, Ontario, performed the STC installation in a customer Gulfstream IV. The package included TrueNorth’s Simphone OpenCabin airborne telecommunications system, which uses a suite of enterprise-level software applications that bring additional voice and data-management capabilities to airplanes without the need to add new hardware. TrueNorth Avionics is based in Ottawa, Canada.
