New hangar ten facility opens

Hangar Ten held a grand opening for the second phase of its Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport FBO in Kansas City, Mo., on October 6. “With this new ­facility, we are bringing great hometown service that far exceeds ­anything currently available,” said owner James Stowers, who shared the ribbon-cutting duties with Missouri governor Jay Nixon.

The new facility includes a two-story 26,000-sq-ft FBO terminal with ­multiple crew rest areas and sleeping rooms that can be used overnight like hotel rooms or as day quarters for shorter rest ­periods. Amenities include a fitness center with men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers. Phase two includes a 29,000-sq-ft hangar and a 40,000-gallon fuel farm. The next phase will include a 22,000-sq-ft hangar and 17,000 sq ft of office space on the 10-acre Hangar Ten property.

Hangar Ten was designed by Dye Aviation Facilities, based in Atlanta, and incorporates solar water heaters, a large skylight and solar light pipes, ­translucent wall panels, exterior sunshades and ­insulated glass with Low E coatings, reflective roof, low water-use landscaping and large overhead circulating fans, all of which should reduce annual energy costs by about 75 to 80 percent.
