In an effort to reduce accidental runway incursions, Garmin has partnered with wireless technology provider I.D. Systems of Woodcliff Lake, N.J., to offer SaveNav, an on-vehicle GPS-based navigation and alert system aimed at providing airport vehicle operators with real-time situational awareness. The system, which comes loaded with maps of more than 950 U.S. airports, provides real-time “moving map” tracking of the vehicle’s location on the airport through a 4.3-inch touchscreen display. The unit defines and displays airport runways and uses risk-weighted color coding to alert drivers to potential runway incursions. Automatic audible alarms also alert vehicle operators when they are approaching runways.
