Australian Wildlife Report Focuses on Bird Strikes

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau wildlife strike report published December 9 shows the number of bird strikes reported against air carrier aircraft alone has nearly doubled over the past decade from 596 in 2004 to 1,010 in 2013. The number of bird strikes involving general aviation aircraft has doubled over the same period as well, while strikes involving military aircraft skyrocketed more than 1,000 percent during the same time period, rising from 10 to 111. The report also documents collisions in Australia between aircraft and a dozen other types of wildlife.
