Dave Newland, a Global and Challenger 605 pilot, survived an upset after his Global 6000 tangled with the wake of a Boeing 747 departing Hong Kong in the summer of 2014, according to Mesa-Ariz.-based APS Training. His aircraft, cleared to depart about eight miles behind the jumbo, was flipped nearly upside down at less than 1,000 feet agl, Newland said in a video testimonial.
He and this copilot felt a little "wiggle" from the wake; a split second later, his aircraft flipped 130 degrees to the left. He credits the upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) he received at APS Training—which taught him to push the nose down, not up, and roll to recover from an upset—for his survival. The aircraft was not damaged during the incident. "Without the training, most people would have pulled and tried to roll, and the outcome wouldn't have been as good," Newland concluded.
