FlightAware Launches MLAT Mode S network Tracking

FlightAware has launched its multilateration (MLAT) Mode S network for tracking non-ADS-B equipped aircraft. MLAT tracking leverages the company’s ground-station network of 3,000 FlightFeeder Mode S receivers in 100 countries via multilateration of transponder signals.

Non ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft, which represent the majority of business jets in Europe, can use the MLAT network for real-time positions. MLAT is currently available throughout Western Europe, over 40 states in the United States, Japan, Singapore, Eastern Australia and New Zealand, with additional coverage being added this year. FlightAware’s latest FlightFeeder Mode S receiver is being demoed at the company’s display (Booth H111).

FlightAware also announced several new capabilities in its global flight tracking, including real-time flight plan data for flights operating in Europe under a tail number, premium international weather imagery, and the ability to track flights without flight plans.
