NBAA’s Safety Committee will hold its annual Single-Pilot Safety Standdown on Monday, November 16, the day before the start of the association’s 2015 convention in Las Vegas. This year’s focus is loss of control in flight (LOC-I) and how to avoid it, a problem that has proven increasingly difficult to thwart.
The standdown will feature presentations beginning with NTSB member Earl Weener, who will detail the severity of the LOC-I problem. Weener is followed by Paul “BJ” Ransbury, a LOC-I prevention and recovery expert with Aviation Performance Solutions, who will highlight a number of LOC-I scenarios and the best ways to prevent and recover from them. The day ends with Noel Duerksen, a Garmin International engineer, who will explain both current and future technologies available to detect and recover from LOC-I events.
This year’s standdown will also premiere the NBAA Single-Pilot Working group’s new LOC-I prevention video shot in an Embraer Phenom 300 simulator at CAE. The short production depicts a realistic LOC-I event, with Tom Turner of the American Bonanza Society facilitating the Q & A conversation that follows.
The single-pilot safety standdown runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $40, including lunch. Pre-registration is required.
