The FAA announced on Friday that it will provide $11 million in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funds to eight airports that display runway incursion risk factors as part of the Runway Incursion Mitigation (RIM) program aimed at identifying and mitigating risk factors that contribute to runway incursions at specific airports. Risk factors include unclear taxiway markings, lighting or signage or confusing taxiway layout. Airport sponsors will use the AIP funds to either study alternatives to reduce the number of runway incursions at their airports or to fund projects that will specifically address unclear taxiway markings, lighting or signage, or taxiway layout concerns to mitigate runway incursion risks.
Airports scheduled to receive funding are Waco (Texas) Regional; Chicago Midway; Philadelphia International; Cleveland Hopkins; Dallas Addison; Lone Star (Texas) Executive; Scholes (Texas) International; and San Jose (Calif.) International.
