The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has scheduled four regional fly-ins for 2017 and expanded each event to a two-day format. The 2017 AOPA fly-ins will be held April 28-29 in Camarillo, California; September 8-9 in Norman, Oklahoma; October 6-7 in Groton, Connecticut; and October 27-28 in Tampa, Florida.
The new format “will offer more to experience—from camping and camaraderie to workshops and clinics,” the association said.
The fly-ins will include a series of seminars and workshops covering topics including mountain flying, owner-performed maintenance and a number of others designed to help improve safety and make flying more accessible, AOPA added. “We’re listening to our members who have asked for more extensive content, and we’re excited to bring new things that will deepen relationships and expand your flying skills,” said AOPA director of outreach and events Chris Eads.
AOPA launched the regional fly-in format in 2014, marking a shift from its previous single annual convention. Since the change to regional events, attendance has grown every year, including by 33 percent in the past year. The association has held 16 of the events to date, hosting more than 6,000 aircraft arrivals and nearly 44,000 visitors.
