On the theory that you can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar, Monmouth County Executive Airport owner Alan Antaki has partnered with the airport’s flight school on an initiative called Young Aviators Club. With its 7,371-foot main runway—soon to be resurfaced—and plans for large-hangar construction in the works, Monmouth County (KBLM) is an increasingly popular business aviation roost. But the privately owned facility, acquired by Antaki in 2013, faces the usual challenges of any airport in a populated area. Through the Young Aviators Club, eight- to 17-year-old residents of Wall Township, where the airport is located, are eligible for free introductory flying lessons with KBLM-based Eagle’s View Aviation.
“It’s really to introduce the children of Wall Township to the benefits of having a general aviation airport in their community,” said Rita Spader, executive director of operations and business development at the airport. Budding pilots who start early can receive up to three free flying lessons—one every three years. For those who really catch the bug and want to expand their training, the airport is offering scholarships through the local school system. Up to six young residents per week are eligible for the free lessons, which include flying over their houses and learning the fundamentals of operating the school’s Cessna trainers.
