Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services (LBAS), the Bombardier Business Aircraft service center in Berlin, has completed the first future air navigation system (FANS)-1/A via Inmarsat satcom installation on a Challenger 604. Previously FANS was operable only with Iridium satcom on this aircraft type. The facility developed and completed the FAA- and EASA-approved solution in conjunction with ASM, a Texas-based advanced avionics systems integrator, which provided a supplemental type certificate (STC) on behalf of Rockwell Collins.
"Instead of re-equipping [with] a completely new satcom system, customers now have a very economical solution by using their existing Rockwell Collins SAT-906 systems," said LBAS senior engineer Marek-Sebastian Rinke.
FANS, which provides direct datalink communication between the pilot and the air traffic controller for ATC clearances, pilot requests and position reporting, is now mandatory for FL350 to FL390 throughout the ICAO North Atlantic (NAT) Region. That mandate took effect last December.
