Universal Aviation Mexico, the joint venture between Universal Weather and Aviation and Avemex, has opened a new 50,000-sq-ft hangar at its Toluca International Airport FBO. The $3.5 million structure—the location’s fifth on the airport—consists of 17,500 sq ft of aircraft storage and 32,000 sq ft of office space. The hangar will be used for locally based operators outside of peak periods.

“We built this “low-movement hangar” to meet the parking and hangarage shortages at Toluca without compromising safety by either positioning aircraft extremely close together or having to make excessive movements to get in and out,” said Grupo Avemex president Agustin Lanzagorta.  “We’ve seen tremendous interest in the new hangar and have already secured many base tenants.”

The joint venture operates FBOs at five airports in Mexico and provides ground handling at more than 50. Its facility at Toluca offers three direct taxiway access points, the most of any service provider on the field.

“Both based and transient operators at Toluca have struggled to find parking and hangarage due to shortages in recent years at this already congested airport,” explained Universal chairman Greg Evans. “Along with the multimillion-dollar renovation of our FBO [terminal] two years ago, our new hangar is recognition of our commitment to supporting our clients' critical missions at this important destination for business aviation.”
