Sheltair and Departments of Homeland Security and Transportation Partner to Stop Human Trafficking
Content Body

Fort Lauderdale, FL. / July 27, 2023 / Aviation News – In an effort to protect those within its communities and beyond its borders, Sheltair has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Transportation on its joint Blue Lightning Initiative (BLI) aimed to end human trafficking.

“Safety and training are vital to the core of our Family First ideology and elevated service standards in business aviation,” said Lisa Holland, President and CEO of Sheltair Aviation. “Through this partnership, programs like BLI supplies our team with the tools and education needed to assist in this epic undertaking to combat human trafficking. Our unwavering commitment to the safety of our team and our guests has been at the forefront of Sheltair’s mission, and we stand united with initiatives such as these to empower the industry and the people we serve.”

All 16 Sheltair FBOs have undergone training through the Blue Lightning Initiative via its virtual training module. This training was amplified by in-person sessions led by a Homeland Security Investigations agent at Sheltair’s largest airport locations, including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (KFLL), Orlando Executive Airport (KORL), and Tampa International Airport (KTPA).

Recognizing private aviation as an integral line of defense, the BLI trains aviation employees on common trafficking indicators and reporting procedures. With a federal reporting mechanism, law enforcement gains the ability to research and analyze information to coordinate an effective, survivor-informed response.

“Human traffickers use various transportation venues to facilitate exploitation, which can include fixed-based operators within airports throughout the country,” said Michael Camal, Senior Engagement Manager with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. “Sheltair has demonstrated a firm commitment to staff training and awareness, which sends a powerful message that traffickers are not welcome at their locations. We will continue to enhance our outreach and training opportunities under the Blue Lightning Initiative to combat this crime wherever it persists.”

Organizations wanting to learn more about using the BLI are encouraged to contact [email protected] and [email protected] for more information.
