Duncan Aviation is celebrating a milestone few companies in business aviation ever reach: 70 years of continuous growth under family ownership.
What began in 1956 when founder Donald Duncan purchased an interest in a Beechcraft distributorship in Omaha, Nebraska, has evolved into the world's largest family-owned business aircraft service provider. Today, the company employs more than 3,000 people, operates full-service maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities in Lincoln, Nebraska; Battle Creek, Michigan; and Provo, Utah; and supports customers worldwide through a network of satellite facilities and mobile response teams.
The anniversary is being celebrated throughout 2026 under the banner, "The Passion for Aviation. The Heart of a Family," a theme that company leaders say reflects both Duncan Aviation's history and the culture that has fueled its success for seven decades.
Evolution and Innovation
Donald Duncan's founding philosophy centered on taking calculated risks, trusting people, and recognizing the value business aviation could bring to companies seeking faster and more effective ways to connect people and opportunities. Those principles remain visible in the organization today.
The company's leadership lineage has remained remarkably consistent. Donald Duncan was succeeded by his son, J. Robert Duncan, who became president in 1968. Current chairman Todd Duncan, Donald's grandson, represents the third generation of family leadership, while Todd's sons, PK and Harrison Duncan, are already active in the business as fourth-generation leaders.
That continuity has helped shape a culture that company leaders describe as people-first. Robert Duncan is widely credited with establishing the belief that team members—not customers, profits, or airplanes—are the foundation of the company's success. By investing in employees and creating long-term career opportunities, Duncan Aviation has sought to create an environment where exceptional customer service follows naturally.
Evidence of that philosophy can be found throughout the organization. The company's Apprentice Program helps team members earn FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification, while the Silver Wings Club recognizes team members with more than 25 years of service. The Duncan Aviation Family Trust supports education, community programs, and aviation-related initiatives in the communities surrounding the company's major facilities. According to the company, the Silver Wings Club now includes more than 700 lifetime members.
"We'll always act small, no matter how big we get," Todd Duncan said when describing the company's commitment to maintaining personal relationships and a family-oriented culture even as the business continues to expand.
The growth itself has been substantial.
Over seven decades, Duncan Aviation has transformed from a regional aircraft business into a full-service aviation support provider offering airframe and engine maintenance, avionics installations, engineering and certification services, interior refurbishments, paint services, component repair, aircraft sales and acquisitions, and parts support. The company has invested heavily in technical training and workforce development, spending tens of millions of dollars to ensure its technicians and specialists remain current with evolving aircraft technologies.
Innovation has also played a central role in the company's evolution. Duncan Aviation was among the first service providers to embrace the concept of project managers serving as a single point of contact for customers during aircraft maintenance and modification events. In 1985, the company opened its first satellite facility, bringing avionics services closer to customers. It later expanded its pre-owned aircraft sales services with aircraft acquisition and sales consulting, helping operators navigate the increasingly complex business aircraft marketplace.
Duncan Aviation Today
Today, that same focus on innovation extends to advanced avionics integration, engineering services, manufacturing capabilities through Duncan Manufacturing Solutions, digital customer tools like DuncanAviationParts.com and myDuncan.aero, and operational technologies designed to improve communication, efficiency, and aircraft availability.
The company's reputation for quality and long-term customer relationships continues to earn industry recognition. In 2026, Duncan Aviation was named No. 160 on Forbes' list of America's Most Trusted Companies, reflecting a business model built on integrity, reliability, and customer service.
70th Edition Duncan Debrief
As part of the anniversary celebration, Duncan Aviation is also looking back at the milestones, people, and decisions that shaped its history through a special 70th-anniversary edition of its in-house magazine, the Duncan Debrief.
The Spring 2026 issue serves as the publication's 70th edition and includes a timeline chronicling major events in company history alongside "70 Facts" highlighting key moments, innovations, and achievements from the past seven decades. The issue explores topics ranging from family leadership and company culture to the growth of the satellite network, project management innovations, aircraft transactions, engineering capabilities, workforce development, government services, and global MRO expansion.
Published twice annually, the Duncan Debrief has become a longstanding communications vehicle for the company and the broader business aviation community. The award-winning magazine is written and produced in-house and focuses on topics relevant to aircraft owners and operators, including technology trends, maintenance strategies, new capabilities, and industry developments.
The anniversary issue underscores a recurring theme throughout Duncan Aviation's history: growth has been pursued not simply to become larger, but to better support customers and team members. Whether through facility expansions, new service offerings, technical training investments, or geographic growth, company leaders consistently point to relationships and people as the organization's defining strength.
As Duncan Aviation enters its eighth decade, the company appears focused on balancing that heritage with continued investment in the future. While aircraft technology, customer expectations, and the business aviation landscape have changed dramatically since 1956, the company's leaders maintain that the values established by Donald Duncan remain relevant today.
For Duncan Aviation, the 70-year milestone is not only an opportunity to celebrate its past, but also a chance to reinforce the principles that have guided the company from a single Midwestern distributorship to one of the most recognized service organizations in business aviation.
