Aspen Avionics Manufacturing Moves to Phoenix

Airo Group’s Aspen Avionics manufacturing operations has been moved to its Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (KDVT) facility. Aspen was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and following Airo’s purchase of the avionics manufacturer in 2020 the manufacturing operations have been consolidated into a single facility in Phoenix, which recently earned AS9100D quality system certification.

The 38,000-sq-ft Phoenix operation also supports Airo’s drone manufacturing, electronics, and composite fabrication operations, in addition to manufacturing Aspen Evolution flight displays. This week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, Aspen is offering 10% off any MFD MAX display when purchased with the company’s new engine instrument software.

Expected to be certified shortly, the engine instrument software upgrade costs $995 and was developed in partnership with Electronics International. Buyers of the upgrade will need to purchase the EDS-33P engine data converter and sensors from Electronics International to complete the upgrade.

Aspen Avionics has also branched into other product lines, including electronics for Airo’s drones and GPS/GNSS sensors for customers such as start-up eVTOL manufacturer Joby Aviation.

“Aspen is becoming an important part of the foundation of Airo,” said Airo Group COO John Uczekaj. “Electronics International is the first instantiation of our broader [efforts] working with engine instruments. We’re opening up and working with everybody we can work with and providing choices for our customers.

“If we stop giving choices, innovations stop. The avionics industry is in danger of doing that again. Eventually innovation overcomes economic protection. If you don’t have competition, you don’t have innovation.”
