It will be the smallest member of the large AgustaWestland family of helicopters thanks to a major modernization of the 20-year-old design funded by parent company Finmeccanica. At the 2016 Heli-Expo show, the Italian group introduced the new AW009 light single – a comprehensive reworking of the SW-4 aircraft developed by its Polish subsidiary, PZL-Swidnik.
