One of the stars of the flying display at the 2019 Dubai Airshow is the Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor. A squadron of the aircraft was deployed earlier this year to Qatar to strengthen U.S. Forces stationed in the Gulf region amid continuing tensions with Iran.

The fifth-generation twin-engine aircraft was originally designed as an all-weather stealth tactical fighter for use in air superiority missions, but it also has ground attack, electronic warfare, and signal intelligence capabilities.

Pratt & Whitney’s F119 afterburning turbofan engines power the F-22A with 35,000 pounds of thrust, and allows sustained supercruise speeds of up to Mach 1.8. The engine’s nozzles incorporate 2D thrust vectoring technology, and can be directed up to 20 degrees for enhanced maneuverability.
