Content Body

Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) has completed a project rehabilitating and rebuilding nearly half of its 8,859-foot main runway. The $7.9 million, month-long project on Runway 12/30 was completed ahead of schedule and on budget. Aging asphalt was removed, new storm drain piping was installed and, over the course of two weeks, 15 acres of concrete was poured.

“The rehab of the airport’s main runway was critical to meet the needs of our current users and opens the door for new opportunities in the future,” said GYY authority chairman Tim Fesko. “The future of the airport is bright and we’re excited by the growing momentum.”

This rehab project was the latest in a series of capital improvements at the airport. Later this year, it will open a dedicated general aviation customs and border protection facility. And in March the airport authority greenlighted construction of a $1.3 million corporate hangar as part of the GYY's master plan.
