FAA Embraces NextGen Task Force Recommendations

The FAA has responded positively to a report from the RTCA NextGen Mid-Term Implementation Task Force, which the agency had requested to recommend key steps to ensure a smooth transition to the full NextGen environment by 2018. The task force had proposed specific improvements in surface movement, runway access, metroplex operations, cruise flight and access to the National Airspace System, as well as all-embracing recommendations covering data communications, integrated air traffic management, three- and five-mile separation standards and the development of equipage incentives. Emphasis was also placed on recognizing the potential of the performance-based capabilities of equipment already carried, but underutilized, by many operators, while avoiding mandates or necessarily requiring further operator investment. The FAA’s response is best summarized by FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt: “The Task Force recommendations add significant value to the FAA’s overall NextGen strategy and are being incorporated into our NextGen Implementation Plan that summarizes the agency’s work to achieve the 2018 operational capabilities. The plan will be released in early March.”
