Franco-Italian turboprop maker ATR has named Leonardo executive Stefano Bortoli its new CEO, the company announced with immediate effect on Monday. Bortoli assumes the chief executive’s position from Christian Scherer, who accepted the position of Airbus chief commercial officer last week. Bortoli also serves as president of the ATR board and Leonardo’s senior vice president of strategy, marketing development, and sales.
ATR cited Bortoli’s “deep knowledge and understanding of the company, the aviation industry, and the regional market” as contributing factors in its decision. “He held various top management positions and has a very international background, providing the right profile and experience to continue the positive developments at ATR,” the company added.
Scherer replaced Eric Schulz at Airbus after the former Rolls-Royce executive decided to leave for personal reasons. Schulz’s departure came only nine months after he replaced long-time Airbus sales chief John Leahy as CCO.
