Embraer EMB-110P1 Bandeirante, Manchester, N.H., Nov. 8, 2005–Business Air’s cargo flight crashed into a Wal-Mart garden center shortly after takeoff from Manchester Airport in VMC. The 3,612-hour ATP pilot, who had 137 hours in the Bandeirante (and a type rating), was seriously injured. An IFR flight plan had been filed for Bangor, Maine.
When the pilot raised the landing gear, he heard an explosion from what he thought was the right engine. When he checked the engine instruments, all gauges for the left engine had gone to zero. He then saw that the left propeller had stopped completely.
Despite his adding full power to the right engine and leaving the flaps at 25 percent, the airplane began a left turn. Although the pilot “stood on the right rudder,” he could not stop a left turning descent. He advised the tower of the emergency, requested a landing back at the airport and was cleared to land on Runway 17. However, before the pilot could fly the airplane back to the airport, it crashed into the garden center.
