Raytheon Hawker 800XP, Smith, Nev., Aug. 28, 2006–Amazingly, there were no fatalities when Hawker N879QS, collided with a Schleicher sailplane at 16,000 feet 42 miles southeast of Reno, Nev. Cleared to descend from 16,000 to 11,000, the Hawker captain saw something out of the corner of her eye to the left. She then saw the glider filling the windshield. She pushed the yoke down and to the right to try to avoid the glider. The first officer turned to see what was happening and saw the captain’s side of the instrument panel “explode.” The right engine quit. The crew declared an emergency and asked for radar vectors because of the damage. The gear would not extend and the crew landed the airplane on its belly at Carson City Airport. The pilot of the sailplane bailed out and was found after walking three miles. The ATP-rated Hawker pilot suffered minor injures. Her ATP-rated copilot and three passengers were unhurt. The NetJets Hawker was damaged.
