British Aerospace 146, Stord, Norway, Oct. 10, 2006–Four of the 16 occupants (including one crewmember) died when a British Aerospace 146-200A regional jet overran the runway and burned at Stord-Sorstokken Airport, Norway.
Operated by Atlantic Airways, the 19-year-old aircraft (OY-CRG) reportedly had been chartered by Aker Kvaerner to transport 12 of the Norwegian industrial company’s personnel from Stavanger-Sola to Molde via Stord. On arrival at Stord after the 20-minute flight, the four-engine jet overran the 3,940-foot-long Runway 33, rolled down sloping ground and caught fire.
This aircraft previously was substantially damaged after landing long and fast on a wet runway after an unstabilized approach to Atlantic’s headquarters base at Vagar in the Faeroe Islands in 1989.
The accident is the airline’s first hull loss and the 10th BAe 146/Avro RJ hull loss. The last fatal BAe 146/Avro RJ70 accident occurred in January 2003, when 75 people were killed in an accident in Turkey.
