On July 15 at 0845 MDT, Learjet 35A N620JM was substantially damaged when the airplane went off the runway at Eagle County Regional Airport, Colo., during the landing roll. The landing gear collapsed and the twinjet subsequently caught fire. VMC prevailed at the time of the accident and wind was 290 degrees at four knots. The on-demand medical transport flight from Aspen, Colo., to Eagle was operating on a VFR flight plan under Part 135. The captain, first officer, a patient and a flight nurse suffered minor injuries, according to the NTSB. A tower controller said the airplane appeared to touch down normally on Runway 29, but the captain said something over the radio that caused the controller to look in the direction of the airplane. He then saw the airplane veer off the runway, shed its main landing gear and catch fire. The Safety Board said the right side of the fuselage, right engine, right wing, and right tiptank sustained “major fire damage.” All three landing gear were broken aft.
